HTL Advantage is committed to developing the West Tennessee workforce to be prepared for a potential Memphis Regional Megasite project and create a pipeline of workers for existing business and industry impacted by a successful megasite project. Below is a list of the many initiatives available to area students, setting the HTL Advantage region workforce apart.

ACT Work-Ready

ACT Work Ready Communities (WRC) empowers states, regions and counties with data, process and tools that drive economic growth. Participants are leveraging the National Career Readiness Certificate to measure and close the skills gap — and building common frameworks that link, align and match their workforce development efforts. Haywood, Tipton and Lauderdale Counties currently participate in the ACT Work-Ready program

Capstone

This ground-breaking course for area high school students aims to improve student understanding and awareness of highly desirable soft skills. Area employers speak to students on a wide range of topics, including professionalism, communication and networking. The course is intended to help students be well-rounded and prepared to enter the workforce.

Pathways to Prosperity

Pathways to Prosperity is a national initiative to reform Career and Technical Education to increase the number of students who complete high school and obtain postsecondary certifications relevant to today’s job market. In June 2012, Tennessee was among the first states to join this multi-state consortium, to address the “skills gap” that threatens the readiness of young Tennesseans entering the workforce. The Southwest initiative was organized in 2014 for the counties in the Southwest Tennessee Economic Development District.  Pathways Southwest provides students academic and career pathways linked to local economic and labor market needs. It seeks to provide a framework for students to get postsecondary credits and certifications while in high school, and support a seamless transition from high school to either a meaningful career or additional training at various postsecondary education institutions.

CPT

This high school dual enrollment program through Dyersburg State Community College helps eligible high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit before they graduate and creates awareness of career opportunities within the manufacturing industry. Students from Brighton and Covington High Schools take courses at DSCC’s Jimmy Naifeh Center in Tipton County in order to earn the Certified Production Technician (CPT) certification, which is also included within the new Associate’s degree in AIIT. Courses include training in workplace safety, manufacturing processes and production, quality control and statistical process control, and predictive preventative maintenance and lubrication.

AIIT

The new AIIT Associate of Applied Science Degree program that contains four stackable certificates (Certified Production Technician, Mechatronics Industrial Electricity, Mechatronics Programmable Logic Controller, Mechatronics Mechanical Components) was been developed to educate a world class workforce for manufacturers in the region. The program enables high school students to earn credit toward an Associates degree during high school, and prepares them to enter the workforce highly skilled in advanced manufacturing.

LEAP

LEAP created a statewide, comprehensive structure enabling students in technology centers and community colleges to participate in technical training developed with input from area employers. The primary goal of this program is to create long-term relationships between employers and area community colleges and/or Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCATs) to identify and address the challenge of job candidate “skills gaps” in the local workforce pool. By ensuring that post-secondary educational institutions are producing the credentials employers need through alliance and data driven decision-making, Tennessee can meet the needs of current employers and also be more effective in recruiting new industry to the state.

TN Promise

Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program focused on increasing the number of students that attend college in our state. It provides students a last-dollar scholarship, meaning the scholarship will cover tuition and fees not covered by the Pell grant, the HOPE scholarship, or state student assistance funds. Students may use the scholarship at any of the state’s 13 community colleges, 27 colleges of applied technology, or other eligible institution offering an associate’s degree program. Students also receive guidance from a mentor, who will assist the student as he or she navigates the college admissions process.

TN Reconnect

Tennessee Reconnect is the Drive to 55 initiative that helps adults return to a college campus to complete their postsecondary credential. As part of Tennessee Reconnect, adults are be able to attend and earn a certificate at any of our 27 Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCATs) completely free of tuition and fees.

Leader In Me

The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model that acts like the operating system of a computer -- it improves the performance of all other programs. Based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Leader in Me equips students with the self-confidence and skills they need to thrive in the 21st-century economy. Covington Integrated Arts Academy is a Leader in Me Reward School and encourages and supports respect for ALL people.
