Memphis International Airport is a joint civil-military public airport located three miles south of the central business district of Memphis, a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States.
Memphis International Airport is home to the main FedEx Express global "SuperHub", which processes a significant portion of the freight carrier's packages. Nonstop FedEx destinations from Memphis include scores of cities across the continental U.S., plus Anchorage and Honolulu, as well as numerous Canadian, Mexican, and Caribbean cities. Intercontinental nonstops include: Cologne, Dubai, Paris, London, Sao Paulo, Seoul and Tokyo. It is considered to be an Airport City and aerotropolis.
From 1993 to 2009, Memphis had the largest cargo operations by volume of any airport worldwide. Major national and international distribution facilities for Flextronics, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Sharp and many others have located in Memphis largely to be near the FedEx hub.
McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport is located in the geographical center of West Tennessee. The airport has daily scheduled regional airline service and meets the same FAA safety and security requirements as much larger facilities. It has a 6,000-foot grooved-surface primary runway with a category 1 instrument landing system plus a 3,500-foot secondary runway. The airport control tower is operated from 7:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. daily under the FAA Contract Tower Program using FAA certified controllers. Remote airport advisories are available during times when the tower is closed. Weather information is provided by an Automated Surface Observation System located on the airfield.
Scheduled airline service is provided by Pacific Wings regional carrier, Tennessee Skies, with three daily flights to and from Nashville/Atlanta. Convenient, free parking is located just a short distance from the terminal building.
